The Different Types of Rural Fencing
Fencing on rural properties tends to be rather different from that in residential or commercial areas. There are specific needs for farmers and people living on acreage that just aren’t required in a more urban setting. While the homestead may be equipped with regular fencing, or a safety fence around the pool, the property itself likely has a number of different fencing installations.
Let’s take a look at some of the fencing that may be required on a rural property.
The Plain Wire Fence
One of the most common fencing installations on rural properties is the plain wire fence. Depending on the purpose of the fence, the plain wire fence usually has two or more wires strung between wooden posts. They are a cost effective fencing solution that will keep stock contained and deter trespassers.
Electric fencing is a safer option than barbed wire, as the pulsing electricity is not harmful to the animal. Barbed wire and other forms of fencing can do physical harm to animals. Electric fencing is particularly useful for containing horses, as these animals can severely injure themselves if they try to run through or leap over more traditional forms of fencing.
Post and Rail Fencing
This is the classic fencing you see on many rural properties, and it is particularly useful for containing horses and livestock. Rails and wire strands are strung between rural posts positioned at intervals around the property.
The Barbed Wire Fence
An effective deterrent to trespassers as well as animals, barbed wire fencing will always have its place on rural properties. It is especially useful for containing cattle, and is sometimes combined with a traditional plain wire fence.
Woven Wire Fencing
Barbed wire or plain wire fencing is not particularly useful for containing animals such as cattle dogs and pigs, therefore woven wire fencing is used for this purpose. Some types of woven wire fencing are:
- Stiff Stay Wire
- Hinged Joint Wire
